Gary Dickey is a founding member of Dickey & Campbell Law Firm whose practice focuses primarily on criminal defense, personal injury, and regulatory litigation. In addition to litigating high-profile cases, Gary is one of Iowa’s leading appellate attorneys on complex issues of criminal and civil law, regularly arguing before the Iowa Supreme Court. He has successfully briefed and argued dozens of cases before state and federal appeals courts. Most notably, he assisted in drafting the brief submitted to the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the prevailing party in Burrage v. United States, 134 S. Ct. 881 (2014).
Gary is a lifelong resident of Des Moines. Upon graduation from Drake University Law School, he clerked for the Honorable Harold Vietor, Senior U.S. District Court Judge for the Southern District of Iowa. In 2004, Gary served in the Office of Governor Vilsack and Lt. Governor Pederson as general counsel and policy director. While with the Governor’s Office, he drafted Executive Order No. 42, which restored the right to vote in Iowa for tens of thousands of ex-felons that had already completed their sentences.
Gary’s clients also benefit from his extensive political and media background. He is a widely recognized source of legal and political advice for candidates seeking public office in Iowa. He has served as legal counsel to numerous campaigns for offices ranging from the Des Moines City Council to United States Senate. Gary is regularly quoted in local media, including the Des Moines Register, and his cases have garnered television coverage.

The determination of the need for legal services and the choice of a lawyer are extremely important decisions and should not be based solely upon advertisements or self-proclaimed expertise. Memberships and offices in legal fraternities and legal societies, technical and professional licenses, and memberships in scientific, technical, and professional associations and societies of law or field of practice do not mean that a lawyer is a specialist or expert in a field of law, nor do they mean that such lawyer is necessarily any more expert or competent than any other lawyer. All potential clients are urged to make their own independent investigation and evaluation of any lawyer being considered.
